The Kubuni Cup is a month-long football tournament that utilizes sports as a tool for community development providing business/entrepreneurship education, emphasizing to communities that young men can be a positive influence in the community. This tournament is youth-led, where young people have the opportunity to become role models and mentors for future generations. We hosted capacity building workshops for volunteers, as well as a formal referee training where those completing the training receive a certificate that can go on their resume. Using youth from the area to referee our matches not only provides youth with training but for the month of June provides youth with the opportunity to earn an income. The championship matches take place on a weekend-long “Bonanza” where various activities are held to engage the community to think innovatively and get crucial information needed to start a small business. This includes having bank booths providing information on opening an account, and receiving loans, CV writing workshops, our own ‘Dragon’s Den’ tent, and various speakers from successful business people. In July 2018 through the Kubuni Cup, we were able to reach over 4,000 community members Uyole/Itezi area. This tournament economically boosted Uyole, as vendors began coming to the match and weekend to sell their goods and over 30 youth were employed.
