Selementally using music to address gender equality #metoo

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

Anaunguruma, she is roaring (like a lion) in Swahili is an amazing hip-hop song by Kubuni Artists Selementally and Recho, illustrating the experiences of a Tanzanian woman navigating society, education and family life.

The video depicts a common experience a lot of young women face, confronting difficult challenges and hurdles that their male counterparts do not have to. It portrays the resilience, the passion, the strength of a Tanzanian – more broadly – an African woman, which is often ignored in mainstream media. Highlighting the unique experiences African women face, the song proves young Tanzanian women have a voice, African women have a voice, and if given the same chance by society, they can fight for themselves and their families.

It demonstrates the need for male allies to listen and amplify women’s voices. Men can take part in gender equality, and the global movements including #metoo but should not be central to the story. While, the story is told by Selementally, we see Sele running to amplify and share her story and struggle. Men need to help women break down the structural inequalities, starting by listening to the experiences of women. This is especially important in developing countries, where young women are reporting being more afraid to speak or to connect to global movements in their countries (Mukangu, 2018). By working together, we can create a more level playing field for young girls in Tanzania, and around the world.

This song was written, produced and artistically imagined by amazing young Tanzanians out of the Kubuni Centre, including Selementally, Recho, Boaz Arts, Pie Chart etc. Through Kubuni Music, we hope to create music that matters and influence young people across the country to make more meaningful, informed decisions about their lives.

But why is this important? Watch the video first, and we’ll continue the discussion.

How can we make change?

The Olive Branch for Children, has been operating in Tanzania for over 10 years, and with projects like the Kubuni Centre, are constantly working to level the playing field by providing academic scholarships to amazing youth, creating apprenticeship/internship opportunities, and providing the space that allows youth to nourish their talents. We believe regardless of gender, people should be given opportunities to learn, develop and to start their lives on the right foot.
